Jack connector types

Article written by Kappa, on the old libellules.ch forum

Jack-type connectors often pose a problem, and I draw your attention to the multiplicity of connector sizes, of which here is a small assortment:

Example of the meaning of dimensions :

5.5*2.5mm DC = > 5.5 is the outside diameter in millimeters of the metal part and 2.5 the hole diameter. DC (Direct Current) is the abbreviation for direct current, in this case 12 V.

In this case, if an external hard disk enclosure is not from a hard disk brand, you should therefore give preference to connectors marked DC, which boils down to this:

Please note that the dimensions are precise and there are several hole diameter values for the same outside diameter.

Example:

For 5.5 mm, you can have a 1.5 mm or 1.9 mm or 2.5 mmm hole.

Likewise, it's important to measure carefully, as some dimensions are very close, e.g. 5.2 and 5.5 mm.

In short, it requires a little precision when measuring!

This should help you make the right choice!
